Primary Wellbeing Dog

Our Primary School Wellbeing Dog

Published on Thursday 02 November, 2023

We were fortunate as a school to receive a grant from the government for a Wellbeing Dog. We are working with Dogs Connect which is a program that sources dogs and places them in schools. They choose dogs that are specifically bred for their temperament and intelligence. This program is now endorsed by Vic and NSW Department of Education as a whole school, sustainable, evidence based, best practice, quality assured support for mental health and wellbeing of all people in school communities.

We would also like to assure the community that this program will not involve anyone who does not wish to be involved. We know that this work will have a really positive impact on many people in our community, and we acknowledge and respect that connection with our wellbeing dog will be offered on a great variety of levels.

Our dog Rafi Oreo is settling in well and is currently being trained before he will be allowed into the classroom. He is still very much a puppy and is learning a lot very quickly. We still need to also teach the students how to interact with Rafi so that he has the best chance of success.

Our school wellbeing dog will become a much loved and important member of our community. The Dogs Connect program will support us in implementing this very gradually, thoroughly, and considerately. At this stage, we encourage anyone who would like to know more about this program to look through the website link: https://dogsconnect.net.au/

Attached you will find a presentation that will answer any questions about a wellbeing dog.
