Getting to know Charles Njock

Charles is our French Teacher at Nunawading Christian College. This week we found out what Charles loves about NCC and why he teaches at our school rather than anywhere else.

Describe teaching in three words.

Caring, giving, creative.

What do you love most about teaching?

I think teaching is the most important profession in the world. As a teacher, I am responsible for preparing future generations to become productive, upstanding citizens who will contribute to society for the entirety of their adult life. I am able to make a difference. I can inspire students to become something that they never thought they could be, or work in a field that they did not think they were cut out for.

What’s special about NCC?

NCC is unique in that the majority of staff and students are active Christians. NCC works very hard at regulating the morality of the student body. It’s very hard for students at NCC to engage in risky behaviour. NCC sees student behaviour as important and teachers have a huge impact upon students. Even in large classrooms, teachers have the ability to influence a student’s opinions. Teachers and students work together, help each other and encourage each other.

What do you learn from your students?

A lot! A teacher is always learning. I learn a lot from what my students are telling me. From my very first day at NCC, I developed a good relationship with my students, willing to share what is bothering them, freely and openly. I always pay attention to their questions, behaviours and attitudes; as a result, my students always make me think about my approach to teaching and learning.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why?

If I wasn’t already a teacher, I would still go back and complete a teaching course because I believe this is the career I’m supposed to be in.
