Getting To Know Heather Pitt

Heather Pitt is our EAL teacher at Nunawading Christian College. Heather has been teaching for 33 years and this week we found out why she loves to teach at NCC.

Describe teaching in 3 words…

Transformative, enriching, a life calling.

What do you love most about teaching…

That I can have a major positive impact on students’ lives now and for eternity.

What is special about NCC…

The students really stand out! Individual initiatives from the students to help their peers are wonderful. The unsung Godly mentoring and support that goes on behind the scenes from students and staff sometimes brings tears to my eyes. Also special is the fact that prayer underpins everything – for students, our school community and all of our needs on a daily basis.

What have you learned from your students…

I admire how they manage to be part of 2 cultures simultaneously. I’ve seen their grit and good humour when things aren’t easy. It puts things into perspective for me.

What would you do if you weren’t a teacher…

I would volunteer in animal rehabilitation because animals can sadly be victims of cruelty and neglect and need kindness, love and another chance.

For my paid job I would be:

  • a Bible worker to help people understand the true, loving character of God
  • or a Christian counsellor to help bring peace and hope to others
  • or a proofreader or writer because I love language
