Lens on Learning – Year 7 Maths

For Lens on Learning this week, we visited our Year 7 Maths class with Mrs Bonnington. The class was taking part in an experiment to learn about the first definition of one metre. Here’s what Ella and Caitlin had to say about the lesson:

“The pendulum experiment is a short, easy experiment to teach about the first definition of the metre. It was first discovered in 1790 by a French scientist named Tallyrand. To do the experiment you will need to tie a weight, any weight, to a metre-long string. If done correctly the pendulum will swing back and forth in exactly 2 seconds. The pendulum experiment was a close success. We were unable to reach the desired time exactly but came very close with a time of 2.07 seconds for the pendulum to swing back and forth.”
